Experimental self-portraiture on non-traditional surfaces: large scale evocative portraits on tar paper and the brown bag challenge
Limited Capacity full

During this presentation participants will hear from two veteran art educators on their use of evocative portraiture. Using non-traditional surfaces students will transform the mundane to the amazing. Participants may choose to complete the large-scale gridded portrait on black roofing tar paper lesson or the experimental self-portrait on brown bag lesson.  Often one of the most challenging aspects of teaching students how to create meaningful portraits isn’t in the technical skill development, but how to embed the personal and evocative voice into their work.  The human mind is very complex and the experiences of adolescence can feel like trying to put together puzzle pieces that don’t seem to naturally fit together.   Complex struggles ensue as the individual’s wrestle with significant growth changes both physically and psychologically. It is through the expression and reaction to those expressions that we gain understanding about ourselves and others. Through introspective thinking, refection, and expression we grow and become the complete people we are intended to be. These projects helps bridge the gap between technical merits and evocative, inquiry-based art making.  A PowerPoint, handout, exemplars, and lesson overview will all be made available to participants. Materials will be provided.

Seeking the Irrational: Dada Collage and Exquisite Corpse Collaborative Drawing
Limited Capacity filling up

In response to WWI, Dada artists developed an anti-art art movement that rejected traditional ideas of fine art, originality, and progress. Some artists developed what they called “chance collages,” seeking to remove artistic creation from rational planning and thought. Later, Surrealist artists developed the exquisite corpse drawing method to create collaborative pieces as a way to connect to universal unconscious concepts and ideas. This presentation will briefly address the historical context of these techniques and then we will produce Dada collages and exquisite corpse drawings. These activities were created for a college level audience but could easily modified for younger students.

The Pop Up Gallery and Collaborative Studio: A Hands-on Approach to Educate Students on the Exhibiting and Presenting Aspects of Art Making
Limited Capacity seats available

Educators will consider potential venues within the local community to hold a Pop Up Gallery/Collaborative Studio experience to provide opportunity for students to learn about and develop exhibiting and presenting skills through collaboration with a professional artist and hands-on participation in a student group exhibition.

Students are first exposed to a professional artist/exhibition where they will learn basic professional exhibition/presenting practices unique to the artist/work and designated pop up space. Students will then participate in a group exhibition wherein students will apply exhibition and presenting skills by hanging and presenting their artwork in a group exhibit within the same space.

The process of networking, locating, setting up, funding, and managing potential venues will be explored through an introduction to a working model. Educators will also be introduced to the SAE+P Program, a program designed to be implemented in the Pop Up Gallery/Collaborative Studio space. Through a real world, hands-on experience, emerging student artists bring the art making process full circle from inquiry and investigation to making through practice, experimentation and revision to "placing the work in the world" by applying exhibiting and presenting practices in a student exhibition.
